What was your background prior to The SMART Group?

"Prior to joining the Smart Group I have always been in customer facing roles, and love meeting new people. I have worked as a manager of a local estate agents and before that I was cabin crew for British Airways. I enjoy a role that is diverse, and where I am able to provide a high level of service."

What made you want to join The SMART Group?

"I joined the Smart Group as I was looking for a new and interesting role. Due to my background in customer service, and a brief period doing beauty, this felt like a really great fit. It combined everything I enjoy, along with this the values of Smart Group really aligned with me."

What is your new role at The SMART Group and what does it involve?

"As a Business Development Manager , so I help clinics find the perfect device to grow their business. I handle inbound enquiries, match clients with the right technology, and provide ongoing support to help them succeed.

I love building relationships and guiding businesses through their journey—not just at the point of sale, but long after. A highlight of my role is hosting one-to-one consultations , whether through Teams calls or in-person visits at our head office , where I get to learn about each clinic’s goals and how we can help them achieve them.

"On a daily basis my mum and dad inspire me. They are both incredibly hard working, my mum works 6 days a week and has always supported herself which is what has made me incredibly independent. My dad has his dream job and is able to enjoy life to the fullest, this is something I have always aspired to achieve. I'd also say my best friends inspire me with how strong and resilient they are."

What is the most useful thing you have learnt since joining?

"I have learnt a variety of knowledge since joining the Smart Group, from product knowledge, to how the devices can benefit clients and also in-depth information about the skin and how the devices can benefit your clients."

What was your background prior to The SMART Group?

"My career actually started in fashion—I worked behind the scenes at Harrods and in the design department at Vivienne Westwood. It was an exciting world to be part of, but along the way, I found myself drawn to marketing. I made the switch when I started working for a hair & beauty supplier, and that’s where I really fell in love with the power of branding, storytelling, and helping businesses grow."

What made you want to join The SMART Group?

"Honestly? The energy, the people, and the purpose. The SMART Group is all about helping clinics succeed , not just by providing world-class devices but by actually supporting their business growth. I love that mindset. It’s not just about selling a product; it’s about building relationships and making a real difference. Plus, the team here is so passionate, innovative, and driven —I knew I wanted to be part of it!"

What is your new role at The SMART Group and what does it involve?

"I’m Head of Marketing , which basically means I get to shout about how amazing The SMART Group is (in a strategic way, of course!). What achievement are you most proud of in life?

"Moving from Italy to the UK for an internship was a huge leap of faith. It wasn’t always easy, but within the first five years, I had built a career I’m really proud of—and I bought my first house before I turned 30! That’s something I never imagined when I first arrived with just a suitcase and a dream. It’s proof that taking risks and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone can pay off!"

Who/ What inspires you?

"I’m inspired by bold, creative people who aren’t afraid to take risks and challenge the norm. Visionary leaders, entrepreneurs, and brands that stand for something real always catch my attention. But I also find inspiration in the industry itself— aesthetics is all about confidence and empowerment , and I love seeing how technology and expertise can make such a difference in people’s lives."

What is the most useful thing you have learnt since joining?

What was your background prior to The SMART Group?

"Strangely, my background and degree is in Animal Behaviour until I realised about 4 years ago that I absolutely loved sales! I started my career at Battersea Dogs Home, moving into animal nutrition around 7 years later which then led to my first sales role selling luxury leisure items. I was fortunate enough to then stumble across The SMART Group and the rest is history!"

What made you want to join The SMART Group?

"The beauty and aesthetics industry has always interested me; I love everything about it. Pairing that passion with a sales and development role is perfect for me. I liked that The SMART Group is well established in the industry and only supplies the highest quality products to other business owners. Everyone I met at The SMART Group before I joined was so friendly and passionate about the company, making it an easy decision."

What is your new role at The SMART Group and what does it involve?

"My role as Business Development Manager involves speaking with new and existing clients, offering full business support, and helping them to grow and develop within the industry. This includes generating sales for The SMART Group and assisting in growing new business."

What are you most excited about joining The SMART Group?

"I love to learn, so definitely learning about all the products! I’m very customer-focused, so getting to know the clients and building relationships is something I look forward to."

What achievement are you most proud of in life?

"During my time at Battersea, I was able to foster hundreds of dogs and cats to get them ready for rehoming. Without that, it might not have been possible to find them new homes."

Who/ What inspires you?

"My grandfather. He built his business from the bottom with very little and achieved many amazing things in his life."

What is the most useful thing you have learnt since joining?

"I’ve previously worked in a B2C industry and have really enjoyed dealing directly with business owners. Learning about the different products and how they can enhance clients' businesses, as well as understanding the results that can be achieved, has also been extremely interesting."

One of the most common questions your clients may ask is “How do you treat scars?” and this can be a complex question. We will cover everything you need to know about scars and how to treat them.

Scarring is part of the body's natural healing process post-tissue damage and is unique to every individual. When the skin is damaged, the tissues break and a protein called collagen is released, aiding in the healing and strength of the wound.

Different treatments are available depending on the client/circumstance to treat the scar (make it disappear).

What are the different types of scars?

Scars that are fine seem to fade after the incision has healed fully, while bigger or deeper scars might be visible for the rest of your life. Some individuals are more prone to scarring than others, and different skin types heal differently. The most common types of scars are:

Surgical scars
Acne scars
Keloid scars, caused by overproduction of collagen during wound healing
Contracture scars, caused by burns

The good news is that scars can fade with assistance. Scars may never totally disappear, but with the correct care and treatment, their appearance can be significantly enhanced or even avoided.

The following treatments may help scars seem less noticeable:

Plasma Pen

What was your background prior to The SMART Group?

"I have worked in the beauty industry for the last 11 years. I began my career at Nirvana Spa where I became a Senior Therapist. After being at Nirvana spa for 7 years, I wanted to take the next step into something that would challenge me, within beauty, which is when I took the step into working with lasers at The Skin Clinic. During my time at The Skin Clinic, I became Assistant Manager which gave me insight into the logistical side of beauty."

What made you want to join The SMART Group?

"After experiencing what the beauty industry had to offer outside of treating, I became interested in finding an opportunity which allowed me to explore this area. I believed it was time to share the skills I had gained over the years of treating and begin training others. From having such a varied background within the industry, I felt that I could excel in this role and knew it would be a role that I would enjoy but still be a new challenge."

What is your new role at The SMART Group and what does it involve?

"My role at The SMART Group is Education and Customer service manager, within my role I am in charge of organising the training and ensuring the training is being delivered to a high standard. In addition to this, it is my responsibility to handle any customer queries."

What are you most excited about joining The SMART Group?

"I am excited about the opportunity of progressing in my career. I am looking forward to leading, being responsible for a team and developing training packages for new equipment."

What achievement are you most proud of in life?

"When I was thirteen years old, I was diagnosed with complete heart block. This meant I was going to need a pacemaker fitted at a very young age. Since then, I have had my second operation and will need heart surgery every 8 years or so to change the batteries. In spite of this barrier, I haven’t let it affect my ability to complete the physical aspects of my job to my full potential which I am continually proud of."

Who/ What inspires you?

"Another passion of mine is fashion and self-care. Through fashion, I can show my creativity by experimenting with current trends and by styling my friends and family. I find it inspiring to see the positive impact that dressing well and feeling 'put together' has on confidence."

What is the most useful thing you have learnt since joining?

"Since joining the SMART Group, I have found the extensive training incredibly useful. I am becoming increasingly confident on the various pieces of equipment. I am looking forward to continuing this training."

We all work hard trying to make our customer experience the best we possibly can, but what happens when it all goes wrong?

Things go wrong sometimes. We’re human and we’re busy and sometimes slip-ups occur. However, this doesn’t have to be the end of the world – it could even be beneficial if you react to the situation appropriately. Our reaction and how we deal with mishaps can actually help to change and improve the client’s perception of our services, therefore helping our business to grow.

Studies have shown that regular clients tend to have an ambivalent perception of products and services, as these services become a norm for them and therefore just form part of a habit (1).

So, when mistakes happen and the proverbial hits the fan, satisfaction ratings plummet down a slippery slope and are at risk of never recovering to the same client perception level. What you do next will determine the future of that client’s worth to your business.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Retaining Dissatisfied Customers

Firstly, don’t blame the situation on others, staffing, circumstances beyond your control or basically anything that deflects responsibility from you.

Here’s a story

Virgin Atlantic used to overbook flights to NY, following a business model first used in USA domestic airlines in the ‘80s. Over 90% of the time, the flights would leave with a full or partially full cabin as people deferred or changed their booking. On the rare occasion of overbooking at the gate, passengers were offered financial inducements to ‘bump’ to the next flight as a small reward for the inconvenience. The later the time, the higher the inducement to drop down.

However, the truly brilliant thing that Virgin did was to ensure a gift, such as flowers or chocolates, were waiting for the most inconvenienced passengers when they arrived at JFK. These would include a personalised message from the staff member at the gate at Heathrow who delivered their bad news, thanking them for their generosity and helping them out during a tough time.

The results? An unlikely ambassador for the Virgin brand, as well as more full planes for the airline.

I also know a clever man from Darlington, who convinced his local bank manager they should send small, simple, ‘thank you’ presents whenever the bank made an error with a clients account, as people tend to get very upset about big banks messing with their money!

The idea then spread across the group and to other sectors. The company turnover is now £35 million a year and they remain at the forefront of client satisfaction and recovery.

The results for your business will be similarly successful

The client’s ambivalence towards you will now be replaced with a self-satisfying pride and an important realisation of why they chose to use your services in the first place. This helps contribute to empathy on their part, enabling them to understand that things go wrong in your working life as they do in their working life. Most importantly, they will realise that you CARE about them – and every human likes that. Now you have an ambassador for your business who will tell everyone why they use you!

So, when the proverbial hits the fan, try to think of it as an opportunity to grow your customer satisfaction and gain an ambassador to your brand. Show your customers that you care, and thereby encourage them to care about you.

Don’t judge by your success, but by how you overcome the challenges and make customers value you more.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): The Building Blocks to Success – #Aesthetics #Business

Maximise profit, minimise losses and ensure you are always playing to your strengths – setting up a few simple KPIs could revolutionise the way you run your aesthetic beauty business.

Many aesthetic business owners, start up because they love the industry and the job, not because they have always wanted to run their own business. This is clear to see, with many businesses being strong on customer care and service delivery, but weaker on profitable decision making. In this article, I’ll give you a really quick introduction to KPIs, why they are important and the six you should look at. Just looking at your bank balance doesn’t show a clear picture of the health of your business. In contrast, KPIs can quickly show where there is profit and maybe loss in your day-to-day activities. In this way, you can decipher what makes you the most money and what may actually cost you money, so you can work smarter.

The old adage “Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity but cash is reality” has never been truer. A business’ health is a sum of its environment and what is happening within, and that is exactly what KPIs enable you to explore. By using some simple KPIs, you can start answering why and how you get the bank balance you see every day!

6 Simple KPIs

Everyone’s top KPI is a growing bank balance. Try setting up some of these simple KPIs to give you an idea of how your business is performing:

Average revenue per hour KPI – Divide your total treatment income by the total hours worked.

Cost per hour KPI – Take all your fixed costs and divide by your total hours open.

Treatment revenue per hour KPI – Take a fixed period of time (week/month), capture the revenue generated by a treatment and divide it by the hours taken to deliver.

Treatment cost per hour KPI – Take the same period of time, all consumable costs and divide by treatment hours delivered.

Revenue & cost per therapist per hour KPI – calculate the revenue achieved and divide by hours worked by individual.

All businesses need promotions, and by recording the results you can measure which types work best for your business and appeal most effectively to clients.

The Definition of Insanity: Whether You Fear or Embrace it, Change is Constant

Change can be daunting; but amidst a global ‘new normal’, beauty salons & clinics are having to face challenges head on, adapting to survive. It’s not all doom and gloom – change can actually be extremely profitable and rewarding, and provides a fantastic opportunity to refresh your service offering to give your clients access to the most advanced and high-quality treatments. As the second hand on my watch reminds me, change is a constant – and we’ve certainly seen a lot of it so far this year. With most beauty salon & clinic owners working most, if not all, days of the week, the forced break in the beauty industry initiated by COVID-19 was certainly a big change. As salons & clinics begin to reopen, uncertainty is rife and many owners are still exploring how they can provide their usual high-quality treatments to their client bases at the volume and the standard they used to. We’re here to give our advice.

Fear change, or embrace it

Never have we seen more clearly what change can do! The events of the pandemic have changed our lives, businesses and probably the future.

The important question for the beauty industry now is: What will a changed world offer to aesthetic beauty operators?

Facing a ‘new normal’

For decades, the aesthetic beauty salon has served its clients with treatments, services and products. Dedicated salon & clinic owners and practitioners have used their time, attention and skills to help clients achieve their skin health goals, massage away their stress, instil confidence in how they look and help them to feel better in themselves.

So, what’s changed?

Not the consumer demand – the need to feel and look great is there as always, and aesthetic services are just as valuable as ever. However, the way in which these services and treatments can be delivered has changed, potentially forever. So, we now have to accept this new normal whilst still finding ways to provide clients with the experiences that they come to salons and clinics for.

The challenges

The fear created by Covid guidelines – suggesting a facial is more dangerous than a haircut – has greatly affected the core demographic who use our services, who tend to feel the most at risk and vulnerable. Instilling trust and confidence in the safety of aesthetic treatments is a key challenge facing many salons and clinics.

In addition, the cost of delivering many normal old treatments has risen, forcing businesses to reconsider their service offerings. Accompanying this is the cost of PPE, and the fact that salons and clinics have been forced to offer fewer treatments per hour to comply with social distancing measures.

The solution? Embrace change

You need to bring back the confidence of your core market. Adjusting your service offering may be just one way to do this, by embracing new technologies to offer ‘no-touch’ treatments such as the SMARTMeso and SMART EM Shape . In this way you can also deliver treatments more quickly – think 30-minute facials! – so that you can still produce incredible results, but with half the time; and double the profit!

Technologies also provide the opportunity to diversify your offering. Have you previously offered body treatments, for example?
